Opportunity: Living in Alberta for over 30 years, cold winters are something that is all too familiar. With the love of the Canadian game of hockey some winter days are just too cold to lace up the skates. Winkler Structures dealer, Whiteline Shelters & Tarps, used to have an outdoor skating rink but it came with several drawbacks. Shovelling the snow off the ice each time you wanted to use the ice was lots of work and the wind-chill also made it hard to enjoy skating when you couldn’t feel your face or toes. As a Winkler Structures dealer, they had the idea to build a fabric covered outdoor arena that could also double as a multi-purpose sports facility for their athletic family, with a batting cage and golf net in the warmer months.
Solution: Whiteline installed a 50’ x 112’ Paramount Low Profile structure and then put in rink boards, netting, benches and LED lights as well as a steel roll up door for a zamboni. With three kids at home, ranging from 4-7 with the love for hockey, the Whiteline rink quickly became the place to be. The kids would go to school and it would be too cold for them outside so they would have “field trips” across the road so the kids could burn off the extra energy. When the bus got home the kids, their friends, and their hockey teams would start piling in. The family held goalie clinics, skating clinics, hockey games, practices and well even a moms’ hockey team practice so they could beat the kids. Four weeks after the community’s other outdoor rinks had lost their ice, Whiteline closed their rink for the year. Whiteline then installed mesh netting and got out the bats and golf clubs. The same 12 oz. building cover that protected skaters from harsh winter weather now protects against the sun’s UV rays while providing natural light for the batting cage and golf net.
